On a real mission, the following procedures are done during taxi of the carrier airplane:



Testing the SAS Lights


  1. SAS lights check – Move SAS function switches [5, 6, 8, 9, fig. 5-2] to LO GAIN and check the SAS lights [1-4, fig. 5-2] (should come OFF). Return function switches to STD BY after each function trips.


Operation of Ram-Air and Augmented Cooling System (Captive  Flight)


To operate the ram-air and augmented cooling systems, proceed as follows:



  1. Cabin source helium shutoff valve switch [11, fig. 5-9] - OFF.


  1. APU cooling switch [17, fig. 5-9] - SINGLE.


  1. Pressure cooling lever [9, fig. 5-9] -  OFF.


  1. X-15 LN2 supply switch (B-52) - Check OPEN. Check with launch operator that switch is OPEN.


  1. Stable platform LN2 cooling control switch (B-52) - Check OFF. Check with launch operator that switch is OFF.


  1. Blower switches [10, fig. 5-9] - OFF.


  1. Ram-air lever [16, fig. 5-3] - OPEN.
