On a real mission, the following procedures are done at cruising altitude, before countdown:
Operation of Augmented Cooling System
To operate the augmented cooling system, proceed as follows:
- Cabin helium source shutoff valve switch [11, fig. 5-9] - OFF.
- APU cooling switch [17, fig. 5-9] - SINGLE .
- Pressure cooling lever [9, fig. 5-9] - OFF.
- Windshield antifogging handle [2, fig. 4-3] - OFF.
- X-15 LN2 supply switch (B-52) - Check OPEN. Check with launch operator that switch is at OPEN.
- Vent suit heater switch [6, fig. 5-4] - HIGH or LOW, as required.
- Pressure suit ventilation knob [5, fig. 5-4] - As required. Knob should be open a minimum of one turn.
- Stable platform LN2 cooling control switch (B-52) - Check OFF. Check with launch operator that switch is OFF.
- Ram-air lever [16, fig. 5-3] - CLOSED.
- Blower switches [10, fig. 5-9] - BLOWERS & LN2 .
- Mixing chamber temperature gage [42, fig. 5-1] - CHECK. When both chamber temperatures stabilize at -40° C (±5° C), proceed to step 12.
- Stable platform switch [33, fig. 5-1] - EXT. Move stable platform switch to EXT and wait 10 minutes before proceeding to step 13.
- Blower switches [10, fig. 5-9] - BLOWER ONLY.
- Stable platform LN2 cooling control switch (B-52) - Check ON. Check with launch operator that switch is ON.
