Main instrument panel in the virtual cockpit of the X-15A-2 SE (Prepar3D® v2 screenshot).
The following sections contain information pertaining to the real X-15A-2 and/or the X-15A-2 SE v2.0 addon.
The operation of the addon is very similar to the operation of the real aircraft. Some information is provided to better understand the operation of the real aircraft on which the operation of the addon is based. Where modes of operation differ, additional information is provided. We hope you will enjoy learning more about the ingenious systems of the X-15A-2 rocket plane.
Unless otherwise noted, the following systems are simulated to conform as closely as possible to the operation of the real aircraft, within the present limitations and capabilities of the currently available simulation platforms:
- X-15 fuel management system (for the three different types of propellants and gases)
- Service panel
- Engine compartment fire detection system
- Engine turbopump system
- Turbopump hydrogen peroxide system
- XLR-99 power plant propellant and control systems (with some limitations, refer to "About Rocket-Propelled Flight in the Simulator")
- Engine controls and indicators
- Propellant supply system
- Liquid oxygen tank
- Ammonia tank
- Engine and propellant control helium system
- Propellant pressurization helium system
- Drop tank system
- Propellant transfer system (from external drop tanks)
- Solid rocket booster ignition system (delta wing model only)
- Auxiliary power units (APUs)
- Electrical power supply systems (generators, AC/DC power distribution, emergency battery and an external power source)
- Temperature control systems
- Hydraulic power supply systems
- Flight control systems and indicators (vertical and horizontal stabilizers, flaps, speed brakes)
- Launch system
- Landing gear system
- Instruments (pitot static, stable platform)
- BCS, SAS, RAS (limited functionalities, basic simulator autopilot functions replacing SAS; BCS/RAS not currently supported in the simulator)
- Instrumentation system controls and indicators (skylight hatch)
- Indicator, caution and warning light system
- Canopy (with some limitations)
- Ejection seat (with some limitations)
- Air conditioning and pressurization system
- Nitrogen system
- Windshield heating (antifogging) system
- Radio communication and ADF/VOR system
- Cockpit lighting system
- Pilot's oxygen system
Nearly all systems, gauges, switches, light indicators and instruments are functional and behave like their original counterparts found in the real aircraft. You can use the tooltips as learning tools for locating the different instruments and switches and memorizing the different panel configurations.
